Express Entry

Introduced in January 2015, the Express Entry program has become the most popular stream offering Canadian Permanent Residence. Individuals are chosen based on their skills and ability to contribute to the Canadian economy. There are 3 programs in this stream:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program

  2. Federal Skilled Trades Program

  3. Canadian Experience Class

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program
This program is for skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently.
1.1 Eligibility
 
In order to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you must:
  • have worked in a NOC skilled occupation (Skill Level 0, A, or B)
    • click here to find your NOC​ Skill Level
    • show that you performed duties in the occupational description for the NOC
    • the skilled work experience must be:​
      • the same NOC as the primary occupation on your immigration application​
      • within the last 10 years
      • paid work
      • at least 1 year of continuous work
  • meet minimum language requirements
    • CLB Level 7 in ​listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • meet education requirements
    • have a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary or post-secondary institution, or
    • if you have foreign education, have a Educational Credential Assessment from a designated organization confirming that the education is equal to a Canadian certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary or post-secondary institution
  • have proof of funds that shows you have enough money to settle in Canada
  • have, or be eligible for, legal immigration status in Canada
  • plan to live outside the province of Quebec

1.2 Selection
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will be scored out of 100 points based on six selection criteria:
  1. Language skills
  2. Education
  3. Work experience
  4. Age
  5. Arranged employment in Canada
  6. Adaptability
You must score 67 points on the point grid to be entered in the Express Entry pool. Once you are in the Express Entry pool, your profile will be ranked based on your CRS Score.
2. Federal Skilled Trades Program
This program is for skilled workers who want to immigrate to Canada permanently based on a qualified trade.
2.1 Eligibility
 
In order to qualify for the Federal Skilled Trades Program, you must:
  • have a valid job offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least 1 year or certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority
  • meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the NOC, except for needing a certificate of qualification
    • ​eligible NOC groups: 72, 73, 82, 92, 632, 633

  • have minimum 2 years work experience in the last 5 years
  • meet minimum language requirements
    • CLB Level 4 for reading and writing​
    • CLB Level 5 for speaking and listening
  • have proof of funds that shows you have enough money to settle in Canada
  • have, or be eligible for, legal immigration status in Canada
  • plan to live outside the province of Quebec

3. Canadian Experience Class
This program is for skilled workers with Canadian work experience who want to become permanent residents.
3.1 Eligibility
 
In order to qualify for the Canadian Experience Class, you must:
  • have worked in a NOC skilled occupation (Skill Level 0, A, or B)​

    • the skilled work experience must be:​
      • within the last 3 years
      • at least 1 year in Canada
      • gained by working in Canada legally
  • meet minimum language requirements
    • CLB Level 7 for NOC 0 and A jobs​
    • CLB Level 5 for NOC B jobs
  • have, or be eligible for, legal immigration status in Canada
  • plan to live outside the province of Quebec
